                                            Chuck Ward
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dear friend
Chuck Ward.  He passed away on August 21, 2010.  Chuck, who adjudicated
for WGI and WGASC, enjoyed judging in CIPA and called our circuit his "other home".
His positive feedback and enthusiasm will be greatly missed.

ATTENTION: Special Parlor session this Saturday.

At 10:30 AM this Saturday, we will be having a parlor session before the Blue Ridge Show with WGI Hall Fame member and WGI founding member Marie Czapinski.

We are very fortunate to have one of the premier icons in the pageantry arts in our circuit to judge this weekend. Marie is a founding member of Winter Guard International and a renowned international adjudicator and clinician. She has judged world finals multiple times for WGI, DCI and BOA.

The focus of this session will be on how to plan the rest of your season to get the most out of  your color guard leading up to championships. How to look at your numbers, judges comments and profiling to best plan the rest of your season. This is a great opportunity to set and talk and ask questions with Marie.

Both shows this weekend feature some of the best judges panels of the winter. There is over 50 plus years of teaching, judging and dedication to the pageantry arts this weekend. Many of the adjudicators have been on multiple panels for finals in all three of the pageantry arts world championships.

I know we are all busy with traveling and getting our guards to the show this Saturday. But I encourage you to come out and meet Marie and take the time to spend with one of the all time greats in winter guard. She is a treat to talk with and has been a personal mentor of mine for many years.

Please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it to confirm that you will be coming to the parlor session so we know what to plan for. Have a great week of rehearsal!!

J.R. Carlisle, CIPA Chief Judge

Judge Change for the Gibbs ContestOur percussion judges will be David Coheley, James Smith and Mike Lynch.  Due to bad weather the original judges were unable to attend the contest. Due to the weather and driving conditions our percussion judges will not be available for critique at the Gibbs contest.  If you have a question about your tapes please contact Jonathan Duke our Percussion Coordinator and he will get you in contact with the judges.  Thank you for understanding that the judges safety must come first.

WOW - You want to sign-up for this today!!!!

We are fortunate to have some of the top most respected adjudicators in the country joining us this season.

I am inviting you to please come on this Saturday for a 30-45 parlor session/clinic to be held at Gibbs, HS before the show. This will start at 2:30 and you will have your choice of one of tow parlor sessions.

1. Movement through the eyes of a judge with world renowned movement guru Michael Turner,

2. GE through the eyes of a judge with DCI former visual caption head Lee Carlson.

Both sessions will be held in the hospitality room  in an informal round table discussion. These sessions are beneficial to instructors and aspiring judges. I know instructors are busy with there groups, but I encourage you to build 30-45 minutes into your day to meet and talk with these wonderful educators and have a chance to hear what they have to say and ask questions that you have always wanted to ask.

Just a couple of things to pass along.

      1.  Please be preparing a basket for the scholarship raffle to be held at Championships.  We are asking each unit to provide a basket, ALL the money from this goes to students in the form of scholarships.  Be creative.  This was a huge success last year and we anticipate this years raffle to be much bigger and better.   Examples of baskets:  "Death by Chocolate",  "Coffee Lovers Basket"  "A night at the Movies",  "Gardening"...  You can drop your baskets off at the registration table or at the Raffle table located on the upper concourse when you get to the arena.  Pleaese email Tracy with what your school will be brining at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

      2.  We are asking each unit to also provide something for the directors hospitality area.  Preferably something that does not need to be refrigerated.  Again, drop these off at the registration table upon arrival.

      3.  Flowers will be available for purchase again this year.  This money goes directly back to CIPA for Championship expenses.  Encourage your "people" to buy flowers from CIPA.  If you would like to pre-order, as many have done in the past, please e-mail This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

      4.  Please check cipaonlie.org daily for information.  As we get closer to Championships, we will be posting important information that you will need.
